Secondhand Gypsy Caravans For Sale

From time to time, we acquire an original gypsy wagon which, time permitting, we restore to it's former glory, or sell 'as is' for someone to take on as a project.

On this page we show what we have available with photos and an honest description as to what may need doing.

If you don't see what you're looking for, it's worth getting in touch, as we have several useful contacts and can often locate a particular type of wagon.

We are always interested in buying secondhand gypsy caravans, so if you have something to sell, please contact us with details.

For Sale - Open Lot Bow Top Gypsy Caravan

This is a beautifully presented open lot wagon sitting on a set of well built unders with some nice axle cases together with artillery wheels fitted with nearly new pneumatic tyres. The unders are painted in cream with red and green scrolling and lining as is the rear pan box.

There is a good set of shafts painted in cream and black with rope twist decoration, together with a set of steps painted in deep cherry red.

The body is painted in cherry red with gold and green scrollwork and green painted butterfly chamfers as well as a pair of horse's heads to the frontage. The roof canvas though not new, is believed to be in serviceable condition.

The interior has the traditional layout with seats to either side with a number of cupboards of different sizes providing useful storage space. The bed measures 3' 1" wide x 5' 8" long when extended and has further cupboard space beneath.

The interior is largely finished in varnished natural wood with off-white door panels with further scrollwork and horse's heads to the cupboards beneath the bed.

Overall, this wagon measures 9' 4" long x 5' 10" wide excluding shafts and steps and is a very nicely proportioned example.
The general condition of this wagon is exceptional with some really lovely paintwork which practically glows in the sun!

Open Lot Bow Top Gypsy Caravan

This is what is known as an open lot bow top caravan because the canvas weather sheets can be removed to reveal a completely open frontage, giving a much lighter interior and better view from within than on a 'doors and windows' bow top caravan.

It sits on pretty unders with numerous carved chamfers to the woodwork and traditional wooden wheels and a pan box to the rear. The wheels and undercarriage have been freshly painted in primrose yellow, with chamfers in signal red and deep green lining.

The roof canvas is newly fitted and under laid with new insulation together with a breathable waterproof membrane. The front weather sheets are newly fitted and are fixed to the body by means of nickel plated turnbuttons, and dutch laced down the centre.

The body is painted in a deep maroon with cream side panels and chamfers picked out in red, gold and green together with off-white lining and gold moulded embellishments to the panels.

The interior has an extravagant, almost regal feel and is fully furnished with seating, cupboards, drawers and underseat lockers galore. The bed is flanked on each side with cut glass mirrors with horse's heads depicted and measures 3'3 x 6'3 when fully extended. Below the bed are additional cupboards and drawers.

The roof is lined with a rich brick and gold fabric and compliments the interior decor which is all maroon and gold with gold moulded embellishments.

All in all, this is a really striking wagon with some nice detailing and is offered in good, sound condition.

For Sale - French Living Van

And now for something completely different ...

This continental take on a gypsy caravan is believed to have been built in southern France in the very early part of the last century.

It has had some recent restoration work including a new set of wheels and appears to be in good order throughout.

The body sits on an extremely attractive set of unders, believed to have come from a French barouche, complete with a sturdy draw bar and a good solid set of steps, all of which are painted in cream with green lining and scrollwork.

The body itself has a zinc covered roof and is painted in two tone green with red and green lining and scrollwork together with a varnished natural wood trim which carries a carved floral motif. The frontage has the most glorious carved panels either side of a grand entrance sporting double doors with coloured glass windows.

Inside, the interior walls are richly scumbled with natural softwood planking to the roof. There are two sets of corner shelves either side of the door and two sets of corner cupboards either side of the cosy bed spot which houses a bed measuring 5'9" x 4'1". Beneath the bed spot is a large cupboard of the same size which could easily be pressed into service as additional sleeping space for children. There is a French Baudin cast iron stove which has not been tested but is believed to be in good working order. Windows to the back and both sides in the same style as the entrance doors and with coloured glass panels.

This is somewhat larger than it's English equivalent with the interior measuring 8'2" x 5'9" excluding the sleeping areas.

Externally the body measures 13'0" x 6'3" excluding roof overhangs and steps.

Unless specifically mentioned, the sale does not include any of the contents or soft furnishings seen in the photos.

We are selling this on our client's behalf and it can be viewed by appointment in Kent.

For Sale - Bow Top Gypsy Caravan

This is a beautiful open lot bow top gypsy caravan believed to have been built and painted by Lol Thompson and the high quality of the original build and paintwork would certainly support this.

It sits on a really pretty set of unders with carved fiddle ended sections throughout together with turned axle cases and nicely proportioned wooden wheels with channel rubber tyres.

There is a pan box at the rear, a working road brake, a good set of shafts, and a solid set of steps.

The whole of the undercarriage is finished in a pale yellow basecoat with green, red and gold detailing.

The body is painted in a striking turquoise and is lavishly covered with scrolled  motifs and coachlining to the front, back and both flanks as well as all chamfers being picked out in red, green and gold leaf. At the back is a pretty little bay window with opening casement, below which is the most wonderfully carved and painted cratch rack for Dobbin's dinner!

Inside there are numerous drawers and cupboards including a central bow fronted cupboard and two sets of cupboards either side of the doorway. There is a queenie stove with a well fitted flu and rainproof terminal.

There is bench seating on both sides of the caravan and a pull out bed measuring 72" long x 38" wide which is framed by a lovely swept frontage with galleried and carved panels. The interior is largely woodgrain scumbled with red, green and gold leaf lining and scrollwork.

The front weathersheets are a little tired but serviceable, though the dutch lacing is frayed and needs renewing. The main roof canvas however appears to be in very good condition.

Overall external dimensions 11'3" long x 6'3" wide x 9'4" high.

We are selling this wonderful wagon on our client's behalf and it may be viewed by appointment in Kent.

For Sale - Reading Gypsy Caravan for restoration

Clearly this lovely wagon has seen some better days and requires comprehensive restoration.

We understand from the owner that it has always been known as the Somerset Wagon, but she believes it was possibly built by Thomas of Chertsey in 1906, though we cannot confirm this.

The unders appear to be largely sound with the front lock and other sections having some nicely carved chamfers and the axle cases especially, having some lovely deep butterfly chamfers. The wheels have a complete set of bell frets, but will all require some restoration to a greater or lesser degree, mainly to the felloes.

The main body and roof especially, require work including some timber replacement, but it's pretty much all there providing a pattern for any sections requiring replacement.

Internally, there is some rudimentary furniture which although probably not original could, with a little work, be made serviceable.

This is not for the faint-hearted, but given time could be restored to it's former glory.

Potential purchasers should note it is being sold as seen but that the cat isn't included!

We are selling this wagon on our client's behalf and it may be viewed by appointment in Kent.

For Sale - Showman's Wagon

Not only is this type of wagon something of a rarity, but to discover it in such wonderful condition is a rare find indeed.
We understand from the owner that it was built by Noah Shaw of Oldham for his family in the 1930s. The present owner has had it for nearly 30 years and it is understood there were only two previous owners.

We are told the van was completely restored 18 months ago and appears to be in good sound condition, though the tyres were not part of the restoration.

As would be expected, this is somewhat longer than the average gypsy caravan and measures approx. 20'0" long x 7'0" wide and is equipped with a heavy duty drawbar with sprung pin hitch.

The outside is finished in red with the unders, mollicroft and steps in cream. As was common with showmans wagons that were often parked up side by side, only one flank has windows, but there is a lantern/mollicroft roof with seven skylights each side allowing more light to enter the interior.

The entrance door opens into a small kitchenette measuring 4'0" x 6'10" fully fitted with cabinets, sink and gas oven and hob - none of which have been tested, but believed to be in working order.

The saloon area measures 9'6" x 6'10" fitted with a wardrobe, dressing chest with mirrored alcove, a further chest of drawers with a glazed china cabinet over and further cupboard with seating to either side. Inside the fireplace is a Godin cast iron stove which is not currently connected to a flu.

Through a doorway is the bedroom measuring 6'10" x 6' complete with a fitted bed measuring 6'10" long x 4'2" wide.

Throughout the caravan there are beautifully painted ceiling panels decorated with floral motifs.

We are selling this wonderful wagon on our client's behalf and it may be viewed by appointment in Kent.
